Maidenhead Town Bowls Success
On Saturday June 27th, the eagerly awaited annual Triangular Tournament took place between three leading Berkshire bowls clubs. Maidenhead Town, Thicket and Desborough bowls clubs all came together to enjoy the same competitive day of previous years.
Held at Maidenhead Thicket Bowls Club each club fielded keen teams of players with the event sponsored by Cordwallis Commecials. Prize money was there to be won, divided amongst the clubs. Each club was focussed on taking The Roy Thomas Memorial Cup back to their clubhouse.
Everyone arrived with keen, competitive ambition. Spectators enjoyed some impressive bowls playing as befits this local bowls tradition founded in 1951.
The tournament was well organised although modestly catered this year, given the likelihood of oppressively hot weather and the necessity to postpone bowls play. Arranging the usual comprehensive catering was risky and could have proved to be a costly waste. Happily the host club and other teams were relieved that the day delivered ideal conditions.
Thicket did provide suitable refreshment and of course drinks, as the bowling progressed. The usual celebratory tea will be next year but Saturday’s lighter alternative was welcomed and appreciated.
This special Triangular event turned out to be Maidenhead Town’s day. They won, achieving 220 points. Following them were the hosts Thicket with 210 points but Desborough were not too far behind with 204 points.
Each team had played four games of seven end each and points were accumulated by awarding 4 points for a win.2 points for a draw and 1 point for each end won.
The Roy Thomas Memorial Trophy, presented to the winners by his son Ian, will bear the winning club’s name when it is proudly displayed at Maidenhead Town’s Oaken Grove HQ.
The Triangular Tournament day remains a very worthwhile and valued occasion. It spotlights the continued keenness for bowls in the Maidenhead area and the county. Bowls club memberships may rise and fall each year but an occasion such as the Triangular Tournament is a true endorsement of the enduring popularity of the game.
